things to ponder

One: This terrible murder case in Connecticut is proof positive of two things.

Here's the link to the story. Let me warn all, the pics and story are not appropriate for all ages or for those who are squeamish.

A) We NEED the death penalty to deter scum like that form destroying a whole family. I hope that there's a strong judge in this case. Too bad Mark Levin (a.k.a. The Great One) can't be the judge in this case.

B) The Second Amendment is necessary and gun restrictions prevent people from defending themselves. While the police and other law enforcement are necessary and respected by me and all concerned citizens, cops can't be omnipresent, especially when there are other things going on such as drug deals, battery, etc.

While the Democrats do a Youtube debate about Iraq, health care, Two Americas, etc. we have to clean up our own house first.

You don't have to be "Jewish" or conservative to be horrified about this case. It could happen to anyone, that's the whole point.

First of all the death penalty is never appropriate. Not at any time and not for any reason. Second, Connecticut executed an inmate in early '06. This state sponsored killing in no way deterred the miscreant in this week's tragedy.

Finally as an old fashioned Henry Wallace Progressive, I'm proud that someone is trying to clean up our health care mess. I work in an Inner City Hospital and I've seen enough to make me a firm believer that we need someone like Tommy Douglas, actor Kiefer Sutherland's Grandfather who pioneered socialized medicine in his native Saskatchewan, to push through universal health care in the US. While you are busy worrying about baseball scores I'll be out there fighting for Tommy's legacy!-West Rogers Park Neighbor

Dear Progressive,

I admire your idealism and enthusiasm. However, we have different points of view.

Perhaps the miscreants wouldn't have been deterred solely by the death penalty. However, that is but one factor in this horrific event. The doors were unlocked giving these savages access to the house. Moreover, the family was probably unarmed, and as a good progressive, you are probably not in favor of private citizens having firearms.

I am an Orthodox Jew and conservative person (better term would be traditional). Socialized medicine isn't my cup of tea.

As for your last comment about me "worrying about baseball scores". I do not mock people's form of entertainment. If person A enjoys baseball and person B likes the theater or Chris Rock or comedy or rap I don't begrudge that person his or her ability to unwind from the stresses of everyday life.

Let's keep it on social issues, not on religion. Look at other posts to see why I said that.

A single payer National Health Service benefits everyone. Hopefully, if all goes well in 2008, we will soon have one.

As for citizens having firearms, I oppose gun control. Given that the Bush Administration seems hell bent on destroying civil liberties in this country, and subverting the Constitution, citizens had better be armed!
